CRAY RESEARCH NAMES GENERAL MANAGER OF NEW WHOLLY OWNED SUBSIDIARY
EAGAN, Minn., Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc., (NYSE: CYR) announced today that Martin Buchanan has become general manager of a wholly owned subsidiary formed as a result of the company's acquisition of selected assets from Floating Point Systems (FPS), Beaverton, Ore. FPS's business centered on designing, manufacturing and marketing computing systems for scientific, engineering and technical applications.
Cray Research completed its acquisition of selected FPS assets earlier this month and incorporated the assets into the as-yet-unnamed subsidiary, to be operated out of Beaverton. Cray Research acquired rights to FPS technologies, system and parts inventories, and equipment to support manufacturing and development efforts. Selected customer and vendor contracts also were assumed as part of the transaction.
Buchanan, who joined Cray Research in 1984, assumes this post after working as senior director of software and application development for Cray Research's Entry Level Systems Division since May of 1990. In this position, Buchanan oversaw software development for the new CRAY Y-MP EL system. Previously, Buchanan served as general manager of Cray Research's Canadian subsidiary since 1986. He also has held positions with Sperry Computer Systems Canada and International Computers Limited in South Africa. As general manager of the new subsidiary, Buchanan will report to John Carlson, Cray Research president and chief operating officer.
"Martin Buchanan has extensive experience in all aspects of the high-performance computing industry, including marketing, customer support and services, software development and operations," said Carlson. "His knowledge and experience will serve this new subsidiary well."
Cray Research creates the most powerful and highest quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
