CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCES LIVERMORE SUPERCOMPUTER ORDER Upgrade Replaces System That Fueled IBM Ad Controversy

EAGAN, Minn., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) announced today that Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore) has ordered and installed a CRAY Y-MP8D supercomputer system to replace an earlier-model CRAY X-MP system in the Livermore Computing Center. Terms were not disclosed.
Company officials noted that the system being replaced is the same 1982-era Cray Research supercomputer IBM claimed to have replaced last year with one of its workstation clusters in a high-profile ad campaign launched in March, 1992. At that time, IBM refused Cray Research's request to discontinue the ads, touching off a publicized disagreement between the two firms.
"We think the fact that the older CRAY X-MP system has never been removed from service, has been fully utilized 24 hours a day, and has now been replaced by a newer, upgraded Cray supercomputer fully substantiates what we've been saying all along, namely, that it was never replaced before," said Franklin J. Parisi, Cray Research vice president of corporate communications. "It's unfortunate that this myth is being continued in ongoing IBM ads."
Separately, Lawrence Livermore is one of two Department of Energy laboratories that is included in a preliminary agreement to develop massively parallel processing (MPP) software capabilities for future Cray Research computing systems under a $70 million agreement, jointly funded by the DOE and Cray Research. In addition, a top-of-the-line CRAY Y-MP C90 supercomputer system was installed and accepted at Livermore's National Energy Research Supercomputer Center (NERSC) last October.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
