CRAY COMPUTER DELIVERS THE FIRST CRAY-3 SUPERCOMPUTER SYSTEM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Computer Corp. (NASDAQ: CRAY) announced today the delivery of the first CRAY-3 supercomputer system to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), in Boulder, Colo. This CRAY-3 is a 4-processor, 128 Megaword supercomputer which executives at a clock speed of 2.08 nanoseconds (480 MHz), the fastest clock speed of any commercially available supercomputer.
The delivery to NCAR is under the terms of an Equipment Loan Agreement, whereby the company will loan the CRAY-3 and a high capacity, high performance RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) disk subsystem to NCAR for approximately six months. During this evaluation and demonstration period, the company will not receive any revenue from NCAR. After the CRAY-3 installation, NCAR is expected to begin transferring to the CRAY-3 its large scale scientific users, who are currently running remotely on the company's in-house CRAY-2 system.
Seymour R. Cray, chairman and chief executive officer stated that, "We are looking forward to working with NCAR and with Thinking Machines Corporation in the joint development of hardware and software to address global weather research simulations." The company announced a cooperative relationship with Thinking Machines, at NCAR, in October 1992, centered on the delivery of the demonstration CRAY-3 system and a Thinking Machines CM-5 system, which was delivered to NCAR in April 1993.
Howard R. Watts, vice president of sales and marketing, further stated that, "The delivery of the first CRAY-3 is a major milestone for the company. NCAR is a key user site and is thus ideal for the initial demonstration and evaluation of the CRAY-3. With this user-experience on the CRAY-3, I believe our sales and marketing activities will be greatly enhanced."
Cray Computer is engaged in the design, development, manufacture and marketing of the CRAY-3 and CRAY-4 supercomputer systems.
