CRAVEN JOINS BELO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

DALLAS, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A. H. Belo Corporation (NYSE: BLC) announced that the Board of Directors, at its regular meeting today, amended the Company's bylaws to enlarge the size of the Board and elected Judith L. Craven, M.D., M.P.H., as a Class III director to serve until the Company's Annual Meeting in May 1995.
Dr. Craven, 47, is president of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, the fifth largest United Way in the United States as measured by dollars raised annually. United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast sponsors 79 agencies offering 269 programs in Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery and Waller Counties, Texas.
Prior to her election as president of the United Way in July 1992, Dr. Craven served nine years as dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and five years concurrently as vice president of multicultural affairs for the University of Texas Health Science Center. Previously, she had been chief of Family Health Services and then director of public health for the City of Houston Health Department, and was chief of anesthesia for Riverside General Hospital in Houston.
In announcing Dr. Craven's election, Robert W. Decherd, Belo's chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Judith Craven brings to Belo's Board an important perspective on our second largest market. Dr. Craven's experiences in Houston over the past 20 years, combined with her demonstrated academic, administrative and community leadership abilities, will add dimension to our Board's deliberations. As KHOU-TV plays an increasingly important role in the Houston community and as a profit center for Belo, Houston representation on our Board is key."
Dr. Craven holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green University, Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine, and Master of Public Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health. She also completed the program for senior managers in government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She has served on three gubernatorial commissions in Texas, and has received many awards recognizing her achievements, including Outstanding Young Women of America, the NAACP VIP Award for Community Services, and fellowship in the American Leadership Forum. She is the second female and first African-American to serve as president in the 71-year history of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast. Dr. Craven is married and has two daughters.
