The jewel of this estate is without a doubt its range, based on the rare local grape, Moscato. Oppidum is made entirely from Moscato grown in Terracina, a town halfway between Rome and Naples. This is definitely a meat-eater's wine and would go well with smoked meats, steak or lamb. >WHITE OF THE WEEK Kracher Illmitz, Pinot Gris, 2006 ($15) The Austrian winemaker is primarily known for dessert wines, but this pinot gris is a very bright kind of light wine with nice acidity. It has a delicate flavor like nectarine nectarine (nĕk'tərēn`), name for a tree (Prunus persica var. nectarina) of the family Rosaceae (rose family) and for its fruit, a smooth-skinned variety of the peach. and white flowers, with a little citrus tone. It is rich and smooth, with a hint of black pepper on the back end. Not a light wine, but great in the summer with anything off the grill, especially steaks and hamburgers, and it's even mellow enough for chicken. >WHITE OF THE WEEK Lolonis Fume Blanc, Mendocino, 2006 ($13.99) This tasty little wine comes from the Redwood Valley in Mendocino, from organically certified vineyards. With a fruity flavor at the front end, it works quite well with any poultry dish.
