Carr decided there's more important things than business and decided to head back to Sydney as soon as he could.

Frank Nunez, a native New Yorker returning home with his family from a vacation to Hawaii, said New Yorkers refuse to live in fear.

``It's going to take more than that to scare us and keep us in the house. It's not going to happen,'' he said.

The ground order was lifted about three hours later, and travelers began scrambling to get new flight assignments and make connections. The lines snaking through some terminals were more than 100 people deep, with passengers waiting an hour or more just to get to the ticket counter.

But most took it in stride, already prepared for long waits because of the additional security implemented after the Sept. 11 attacks. Many shrugged off the crash, assuming it was due to mechanical failures that are an inherent part of flying.

``I'm not nervous. I'm just inconvenienced,'' said Helen Sawczak, a Melbourne, Australia, woman trying to find another New York flight for her business trip.

Castles reassured travelers that LAX is safe, particularly in light of security measures implemented in the wake of the tragedy on Sept. 11, when hijacked jetliners hit the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

``We are concerned as we are any time there has been an aircraft accident and given the current worldwide security situation, all of the airportwide facilities are on a very high level of awareness and remain concerned,'' Castles said.
