CRAIN'S DETROIT BUSINESS NAMES GERALD MACDONALD 1991 EXECUTIVE NEWSMAKER
DETROIT, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Crain's Detroit Business has named Gerald MacDonald, chairman and CEO of Manufacturers National Corp. and Manufacturers Bank, N.A. as the 1991 Executive Newsmaker of the Year.
MacDonald will receive the award and be the keynote speaker at the Women's Economic Club luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Columbus Ballroom at the Westin Hotel in Detroit. For reservations contact the Women's Economic Club at 313-963-5088.
MacDonald was selected from a list of 10 finalists as Crain's Detroit Newsmaker based on the Manufacturers and Comerica merger that took the Detroit business community by surprise in October of 1991. Manufacturers, known as a strong commercial and industrial loan institution, and Comerica, identified as a major consumer lending bank, achieved the merger primarily through top-secret, one-on-one negotiations between MacDonald and his Comerica counterpart, Eugene Miller. The merger resulted in creating the second-largest financial institution in Michigan and one of America's 25 largest bank holding companies.
MacDonald has been a respected member of the metropolitan Detroit business community since he began his career at Manufacturers Bank in 1960. He provided leadership as the officer-in-charge of the Consumer Loan Department (1972) and later as officer-in-charge of the Michigan Banking Department (1976). He was appointed president of Manufacturers Bank of Southfield in 1980. In 1982, he became president of Manufacturers Bank of Detroit and was appointed chief executive officer in 1988. In April 1990, MacDonald began serving as chairman and chief executive officer of Manufacturers National Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: MNTL).
A University of Michigan alumnus, MacDonald later completed graduate studies at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and the Stanford University Executive Program.
MacDonald has served the community in many capacities and currently is a director of the Detroit Athletic Club, Detroit Renaissance, Inc., Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall, Economic Club of Detroit, Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce, New Detroit and United Way of Southeastern Michigan. He is also a trustee of Children's Hospital of Michigan and a member of the finance committee of the Citizens Research Council of Michigan.
Crain's Detroit Business, which debuted February 1985, celebrates its anniversary each year with its annual tribute to an outstanding Detroit-area business executive who made news and a positive contribution to business and the community during the year.
