CRACKER BARREL OLD COUNTRY STORE, INC. ANNOUNCES FISCAL YEAR-END RESULTS.LEBANON, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1997--Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. (Nasdaq:NM/CBRL) today announced results for its fiscal year ended August 1, 1997. Net sales Net Sales The amount a seller receives from the buyer after costs associated with the sale are deducted. Notes: This amount is calculated by subtracting the following items from gross sales: merchandise returned for credit, allowances for damaged or missing goods, freight for fiscal 1997 were $1,123.9 million compared with net sales of $943.3 million in fiscal 1996. Pre-tax income was $137.5 million compared with $116.6 million last year before taking a one-time, pre-tax charge of $14.2 million last year. Net income was $86.6 million, or $1.41 per share, compared with $72.3 million, or $1.19 per share, last year before taking a one-time, after-tax charge of $8.8 million, or $0.15 per share. The one-time charge in the previous fiscal year covered the expense of closing three Cracker Barrel This article is about the restaurant-and-store chain. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. stores; costs associated with replacing the Company's point-of-sale system; and costs associated with closing its three Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Corner Markets. Net sales for the fourth quarter ended August 1, 1997, were $322.0 million compared with net sales of $282.2 million in the fourth quarter last year. Pre-tax income was $48.9 million compared with $43.1 million before the one-time charge in the year-earlier period. Net income was $31.2 million, or $0.51 per share, compared with $26.7 million, or $0.44 per share before the one-time charge a year ago. Commenting on the results, Dan W. Evins, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Comparable 52-week same store restaurant sales for fiscal 1997 increased 3.3%, and same store retail sales increased 7.9% for a combined increase of 4.3%. The balance of the sales increase was attributable to new stores opened during the year, net of the effect of the three closed stores. "In the fourth quarter of fiscal 1997, comparable 13-week same store restaurant sales increased 3.0% and same store retail sales were up 4.4%, for a combined increase of 3.3%. Sales from new stores net of the effect of store closings and the effect of a one-week shift in comparable 13-week periods partially offset by an additional week in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year accounted for the balance of the fourth quarter increase. The fourth quarter of fiscal 1997 was the 13 weeks beginning May 3, 1997, and ending August 1, 1997. Last fiscal year the fourth quarter was the 14 weeks beginning April 27, 1996, and ending August 2, 1996. The two fiscal quarters do not cover the comparable 13-week periods because fiscal 1996 was a 53-week year. "In fiscal 1997, we opened 50 new Cracker Barrel stores bringing the total stores open at fiscal year end to 307. As of August 1, 1997, we had stores in 31 states which included the addition of Connecticut Connecticut, state, United States Connecticut (kənĕt`ĭkət), southernmost of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (N), Rhode Island (E), Long Island Sound (S), and New York (W). , New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of , and Utah during 1997. Our plan is to open 50 new Cracker Barrel stores in fiscal 1998, including new stores in the states of Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, and New Jersey, which will bring the total number of stores to 357 at the end of the year. Our growth strategy continues to focus on delivering quality and value to our customers."
