In addition, the City Section Rules Committee determined the girls' team violated two rules regarding offseason contact between athletes and coaches, resulting in the dismissal of an assistant coach.

An assistant boys' soccer coach also was dismissed, and the entire Van Nuys athletic department has been placed on one year's probation.

The Rules Committee's decision came after it investigated Sharon Foster's transfer from Village Christian to Van Nuys in the spring. Van Nuys was forced out of this year's volleyball playoffs after Foster's ineligibility INELIGIBILITY. The incapacity to be lawfully elected.

The committee determined Nguyen had more than 20 hours of offseason contact with Van Nuys players, which violates two section rules. Nguyen heads the Valley Thunder club program that is based at the high school. Many of the Van Nuys players also belong to the Valley Thunder.

Nguyen has been banned from coaching until the fall of 1998, Van Nuys principal Russ Thompson said. Nguyen still can run the Valley Thunder, and the players can play for him because the club and high school seasons are separate. Thompson said exactly how Nguyen will stay away from the players during next season has not been determined.

``Right now, it's offseason. It's not an issue,'' Thompson said.

Van Nuys' probation lasts until Dec. 3, 1997.

Thompson said he wouldn't comment on the committee's rulings or on whether the school will appeal until he had spoken to commissioner Barbara Fiege.

Boys' soccer assistant coach Raul Paredes has been dismissed for holding illegal practices.
