CRA revokes charitable status for inappropriate gifts and benefits.


OTTAWA -- The Canada Revenue Agency The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers:
  • tax laws for the Government of Canada and for most provinces and territories;
  • international trade legislation; and
  • various social and economic benefit and incentive programs delivered through the tax system.
 revoked the registered charitable status of the Lord's Evangelical Church of Deliverance and Prayer of Toronto.

The CRA See Community Reinvestment Act.  found that the Church had provided inappropriate gifts and improper benefits to members, (personal telephone charges, rent, car lease payments, vehicle operating expenses Operating expenses

The amount paid for asset maintenance or the cost of doing business, excluding depreciation. Earnings are distributed after operating expenses are deducted.
, monthly mortgage payments and the Church did not keep adequate books and records of donations and expenses.

The Federal Court of Appeal agreed that the Church was in contravention A term of French law meaning an act violative of a law, a treaty, or an agreement made between parties; a breach of law punishable by a fine of fifteen francs or less and by an imprisonment of three days or less. In the U.S.  of the requirements of the Income Tax Act and that the Minister's decision to revoke was correct. As a consequence, the eRA is revoking the Church's charitable status.
