CPUC Ruling Undermines Competition, Hurts Consumers; CPUC Agrees to Impose "Interim Transition Charges" on Customers Who Switch Electric Suppliers to Save Money.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 1996--The California Public Utilities Commission The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC; also often commonly referred to as simply the PUC) [1] is a state Public Utilities Commission which regulates privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power,  (CPUC CPUC California Public Utilities Commission

"Naturally, we're disappointed, but ultimately, competition will not be suppressed," said Chris Mayer, Assistant General Manager of the Modesto Irrigation irrigation, in agriculture, artificial watering of the land. Although used chiefly in regions with annual rainfall of less than 20 in. (51 cm), it is also used in wetter areas to grow certain crops, e.g., rice.  District (MID). "Electric rates are 50 percent higher in California than the national average. Consumers know the only way to reduce the high cost of electricity is to open the market to real competition. Competition is coming, no matter what."

MID prompted PG&E's motion with a recent agreement to begin selling electricity to several of PG&E's industrial customers in Pittsburg, Calif. By buying power Buying Power

from the Modesto Irrigation District instead of PG&E, the companies would cut their electricity rates by up to 33 percent.

"While today's decision by the commission is disappointing, the true test will be the commission's decision on how high to set the interim transition charges," said Greg Blue Gregory B. Blue (born March 12, 1982 in (Atlanta, Georgia) is a safety free agent of the NFL. Regulatory Affairs professionals usually have responsibility for the following general areas:
for Destec Power Services, who will provide power to MID. "If the rates are fair and reasonable, competition will move forward and consumers will benefit from lower rates, better service and more choice. If the rates are unreasonably high, it will be a clear signal that the commission isn't serious when it says it wants to help create a competitive marketplace."

PG&E's motion was opposed by many of the state's major business, industry, agriculture, energy and consumer associations, including the California Manufacturers Association, the Independent Energy Producers, the California Retailers Association, the California League The California League is a minor league baseball league which operates throughout the state of California. Before 2002, it was classified as a "High-A" league, indicating its status as a Class A league with the highest level of competition within that classification, and the fifth  of Food Processors and Californians for Competitive Electricity.

In addition, more than 20 legislators, including Assembly Speaker Curt Pringle, urged the commission to reject PG&E's motion, saying that the issue should be resolved in the Legislature, where at least three measures have been introduced on the issue.
