CPU Technology Inc. invention enables U.S. Air Force to save billions.

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1994--CPU Technology, Inc. and the U.S. Air Force have engaged in a contract for the next generation avionics processor.

Called the Advanced Avionics Processor 3 (AAP AAP - Association of American Publishers 3), the high performance processor improves performance more than 20 times over today's most popular avionics processor. The AAP3 directly provides binary compatibility See binary compatible.  with the existing avionics software Avionics software is embedded software with legally-mandated safety and reliability concerns used in avionics. The main difference between avionic software and conventional embedded software is that the development process is required by law and is optimized for safety.  base.

The AAP3 will provide the state-of-the-art, superscalar A CPU architecture that allows more than one instruction to be executed in one clock cycle. See pipeline processing.

(architecture) superscalar - A superscalar architecture is a uniprocessor that can execute two or more scalar operations in parallel.
, 64-bit performance necessary to run new and future applications. It will be available from multiple commercial sources, and supported by third-party tool suppliers. Dr. Mark Michael of the Air Force's Wright Laboratory said, "This technology provides the improved performance we need, and eliminates the need to rewrite existing MIL-STD-1750A software. It would cost billions of dollars to rewrite the 1750A software in use today." Dr. Michael added that the AAP3 is also a major step for the Air Force in its move to adapt commercial technology for use in military applications.

Creation of the AAP3 would not be possible without CPU CPU

). The traditional evolution of processor architectures has been an arduous task due to the time and expense involved in validating compatibility---even then, all processors have functional errors. These errors are not acceptable when human life is at risk. BVT-- -the most comprehensive test method available today---drastically reduces the number of functional errors over other solutions, such that the finished processor will have the fewest number of errors currently possible.

Behavioral Verification Technology provides an affordable solution that automates the compatibility validation process for any processor. Company president Edward King Edward King refers to more than one person;
  • Edward King (British poet) 1612 - 1637.
  • Edward King (English bishop) 1829 - 1910.
  • Edward King (jurist) - twice nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States by President John Tyler
  • Edward J.
 said, "It is only natural the Air Force would migrate to BVT-based solutions since this proven commercial technology greatly reduces the risk of compatibility errors, reduces time-to-market, and offers dramatic cost savings."

CPU Technology, Inc. offers a broad range of Behavioral Verification Technology-based products and services, including validation suites and microprocessors. The company markets to Fortune 100 companies and the U.S. government. Privately held, CPU Technology is headquartered in Fremont.
