CPSC announces five furniture recalls.The Consumer Products Safety Commission announced five individual safety recalls of furniture between Aug. 18 and Sept. 28. The latest and biggest recall involved Sauder Woodworking Co. of Archbold, OH. CPSC CPSC Consumer Product Safety Commission (US) CPSC Computer Science (course) CPSC Canadian Plastics Sector Council (Ottawa, ON, Canada) CPSC Chemical Processing Safety Committee and Sauder jointly announced the recall of 300,000 ready-to-assemble TV/VCR carts sold between 1991 and 1999. Sauder received one report of a cart tipping over; no injury was reported. Sauder recalled 592,000 of another model of TV/VCR carts in April, following consumer complaints of tip-overs, including one in which an infant was reportedly killed. On Sept. 24, the CPSC and IKEA IKEA Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd (Swedish home furnishings retailer founder's initials and location) Home Furnishings of Plymouth Meeting, PA, recalled 25,000 Bertby glass-door wall cabinets. CPSC reported that some of the Italian made cabinets have the wrong-sized screws for the safety bracket, which the agency said could result to the cabinet not being properly secured to the wall. IKEA received two reports of cabinets falling; neither resulted in an injury. Consumers are urged to contact IKEA to receive a tree repair kit. CPSC said Delta received six reports of the fabric seat coming off, including two eases in which children received lacerations from the exposed metal seat support rod. Consumers who contact Delta will receive a free repair kit consisting of four straps to prevent the fabric seat from coming off the China-made chairs. On Aug. 19, Meco Corp. of Greenville, TN, recalled 3,800 Kid's Essential five-piece folding furniture sets because the red paint on the metal frames contains excessive lead levels and poses a poisoning hazard to young children. No injuries were reported. The sets, made in China, were sold nationally through furniture and wholesale clubs for between $25 and $40. Free replacement chairs are available to consumers who contact Meco to return their red chairs. American Signature Inc. of Columbus, OH, recalled about 380 "Windsor" dinette di·nette n. 1.
