Profitability is Key

In the past, CPAs have shunned client payroll services, and referred clients away to traditional payroll service bureaus A payroll service bureau is an accounting business whose main focus is the preparation of payroll for other businesses. Such firms are often run by Certified Public Accountants, though a typical payroll processing company will refer to itself as a service bureau rather than a CPA . Online Systems Relieve Payroll Headaches

This attitude is changing with the arrival of new Internet-enabled technologies. CPAs are discovering that they can easily build a profitable payroll practice without an upfront investment. Today's technologies enable CPAs to offer payroll services with no software installation and no ongoing maintenance.

With traditional software, only one person could access payroll data at one time, making it hard to work with clients. Additionally, the program was either on the CPA's computer or the client's, making it impossible to manage payroll tasks remotely.

With online systems, clients and their CPAs can seamlessly collaborate, each viewing and entering data into the same payroll account from different locations.
