CPA DONATES TIME TO HELP YOUTHS MAKE A DIFFERENCE.Byline: VICTORIA GIRAUD Jon Myl believes people can make a difference in preventing crime, and he volunteers a great deal of his time to various organizations to make that dream come true. ``An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure couldn't be more true,'' Jon declared. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, Anti-Gang Task Force and is a member of the coordinating committee of the city's Youth Alliance. He manages to find time for his three children, Junior Achievement, Cub Scouts and Toastmasters as well. ``I'm a full-time volunteer and part-time accountant,'' Jon jokes. He hopes that his efforts will make a difference in making the ``community a better place, and make it better for my children to grow up in. If we don't do it now, we will be just like the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. .'' MARC was organized after the 1990 slaying of Marc Squires, a 15-year-old honor student who was killed by a gang member. The Santa Clarita chapter was formed in 1994 to ``keep Santa Clarita a safe place to live, work and play.'' Manned by volunteers, ``parents who want to make a difference,'' MARC has several programs to promote its mission. Club MARC is ``the one I'm most proud of,'' Jon said. This club for fourth- through sixth-graders meets after school for projects such as school cleanup - ``the theory is that they will be less likely to come back later and graffiti the property,'' Jon said. Their motto is, ``It's cool to be cool (crime free, opposed to violence, out serving the community and lawful.'' Recently, MARC sponsored the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, State Junior High Chess Championship for students in kindergarten through ninth grade. ``When a child in chess makes a wrong move, they pay the price,'' Jon notes. The Hero of the Week program, in conjunction with the Anti-Gang Task Force, recognizes seventh- through 12th-grade students from Santa Clarita schools - ``kids who have made positive choices.'' Jon recalled a young student, Memo Medrano, once labeled ``at-risk,'' but because of his positive choices, had been selected as a hero. At the first annual awards ceremony for the recognized heroes, Medrano related that because he had received the award, he felt encouraged enough to run for and win a spot on the Hart High School Hart High School may refer to:
The Youth Alliance, which Jon describes as the hub of the wheel for youth organizations, is made up of representatives from various groups and is involved in coordinating activities to eliminate duplication of services. They have Star Thrower Awards for both adults and youths who have tried to make a difference. Jon, a native Californian, grew up in Orange County. He says he was inspired to be involved after learning of the 1960s Kitty Genovese Catherine Susan Genovese (July 7, 1935[1] — March 13, 1964), commonly known as Kitty Genovese, was a New York City woman who was stabbed to death near her home in the Kew Gardens section of Queens, New York. case, a true story of a woman whose screams for help as she was being strangled stran·gle v. stran·gled, stran·gling, stran·gles v.tr. 1. a. Being self-employed has enabled Jon to give his time to the community as well as freeing up time to spend with his children. ``Unfortunately, we live in a society with two wage earners and kids are usually raised by other people. The most important thing we can provide (as parents) is education and an emotional safety net.'' His wife, Margit, who works at home as a picture framer, is also enthusiastic about volunteering; she gives her time as the leader of a Cub Scout troop and toward fund raising for various schools. The whole family has gotten involved in plays such as last year's ``Alice in Wonderland Wonderland See also Heaven, Paradise, Utopia. Annwn land of joy and beauty without disease or death. As a member of the Valencia Toastmasters, Jon will be participating in a speech contest next week. His subject is one of his favorites, ``Why Am I Mad About Rising Crime?''
