CP&L ACCELERATES IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS AT BRUNSWICK PLANT
 RALEIGH, N.C., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Carolina Power & Light

(NYSE: CPL) announces an accelerated effort to improve operations and performance at its Brunswick nuclear plant near Southport, N.C.
"Our objective is to raise the Brunswick plant's overall performance to a level of excellence," said Sherwood H. Smith Jr., CP&L chairman and president.
A backlog of maintenance and modification work has handicapped many of our ongoing improvement efforts at the plant, Smith said. This backlog has grown steadily and has tended to prevent the plant from realizing the full benefits of the initiatives that have been undertaken previously, he said.
"The safe, reliable and efficient operation of all of our company's nuclear facilities is our number one corporate priority," Smith said. "Our goal is to bring the performance of all our nuclear units to the same excellent level as our Harris plant. While many improvements have been made at the Brunswick plant, other needs for substantial improvement remain."
The company's preliminary estimate is that this accelerated effort will require approximately $200-$225 million over the next five years.
