Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, - Two-time All-Daily News center fielder Kellie Cox of Quartz Hill High said she won't participate in the championship rounds of the Hart Classic softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Cox said softball teammates Andrea Cabriales and Cheryl Collins also are planning to skip softball to play soccer for Cox's Ambush (language) AMBUSH - A language for linear programming problems in a materials processing and transportation network. ``I'm not too happy about it, but I've been playing for the Ambush for eight years, so I have a lot of loyalty to them, too,'' said Cox, who has committed to Cal State Fullerton on a soccer scholarship. Last year, Cox played soccer instead of softball during one day of the High Desert Classic tournament, and Quartz Hill coach Coy Ray benched Cox for the next game, a tournament championship victory over Harvard-Westlake. On Friday, Ray said he was aware of the threesome's decision not to join the softball team today. ``No coach wants a player to opt to go somewhere else,'' Ray said. ``But it hasn't happened yet, so I don't want to speculate. But if they miss the game, they probably won't play in our next game against (Ridgecrest) Burroughs. That's our policy.'' --Going for the Gold: In the top-tiered Gold bracket, featuring four teams undefeated in pool play, Hart meets Westlake in one semifinal and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. I think it wore down her arm a little bit by the end of last year.'' Spehar has been terrific. She beat Granada Hills 9-0 on a one-hitter and Camarillo 1-0 on a three-hitter. --Familiar foes: Hart is plenty familiar with Westlake. The Indians (2-0) beat Westlake in the tournament semifinals last year and lost to the Warriors in the tournament final in 1999. ``I couldn't be happier with the way we've been playing,'' Hart coach Cathy Giordano said. ``It's early, but it's always nice to win your own tournament. It's not do or die, but it would be a good confidence builder.'' Giordano believes playing Thousand Oaks in the final would provide valuable experience against a high-quality team. But don't blame her if she roots for Agoura to win the semifinal, so Hart can play the Chargers.
