He starred in cowboy films from 1936 to 1947, and in a Motion Picture Herald fame poll was voted one of the 10 best money-making western stars during that period.

In 1950, he starred in ABC's ``The Marshal of Gunsight Pass,'' which ran for six months before being canceled.

The show was probably the only network western action series produced live from a studio. It was broadcast live on the West Coast and seen via kinescope kinescope /kine·scope/ (-skop) an instrument for ascertaining ocular refraction.  in the rest of the nation.

In 1967 and 1968, Dean was a member of the board of directors for the Academy of Western Music.

Dean received a Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country & Western Music in 1978.
