COWBOY FESTIVAL BIG TICKET ITEM; CITY ROPES IN LARGE ADVANCE SALES FOR POETRY AND MUSIC EVENT.

Byline: Teresa Jimenez Daily News Staff Writer

It's months before showtime and the 1998 Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival already has set records.

In the first 11 days after tickets became available Nov. 3, more than $30,000 worth were sold. That amounts to about 40 percent of the city's expected ticket revenue for special shows, said Michael Marks Michael Marks, (June 1859 – December 31 1907), was one of the two co-founders of the retail chain Marks and Spencer.

Marks, who was born in Slonim, Belarus (then part of Russian Empire and Poland) as Michał Marks of Polish-Lithuanian and Jewish ancestry, emigrated
, recreation coordinator for the city.

Tickets for the festival, which will run from March 27 to 29, went on sale early in an effort by the city to make the event as profitable and successful as possible, Marks said. Most of the sales resulted from advertisements in national cowboy magazines and mailers to the 5,000 people on the city's mailing list An automated e-mail system on the Internet, which is maintained by subject matter. There are thousands of such lists that reach millions of individuals and businesses. New users generally subscribe by sending an e-mail with the word "subscribe" in it and subsequently receive all new  from past festivals, he said.

``Seeing how they've sold, it looks like people are glad they're available,'' Marks said. ``If it sells out, we can invest our time making the shows even better.''

Marks attributes the booming ticket sales to the event's past successes, its popular performers, and, especially, the setting at Melody Ranch.

``They see it at Melody Ranch and there's no place in the world like it,'' Marks said. ``It's like cowboy Woodstock.''

The performers bring it all together, Marks said. Baxter Black Baxter Black (born January 2, 1945) is an American cowboy, poet, philosopher, former large-animal veterinarian, and radio commentator.
