COURTHOUSE FUGITIVE CAUGHT AFTER 11 DAYS.

Steven Dobbins, 26, who had been facing a sentence of up to 42 years in prison when he knocked down a guard Jan. 26 and ran from a jail bus, was caught Monday after a chase that ended with him crashing a car into a fence, deputies said.

Dobbins can be tried with the escape as a "third strike," which means he could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison if convicted, officials said.

Dobbins saw them coming and sped south on Fourth Street East, leading deputies on a chase that ended when he crashed into a fence near Stanridge Avenue and Avenue J-7. Dobbins ran, and deputies said they caught him in a back yard.

Dobbins' father, Rex Wayne Dobbins, 51, of Lancaster, pleaded not guilty last week to charges that he helped his son escape. Authorities say the elder Dobbins left a car with keys in it near the Antelope Valley courthouse for his son.

Steven Dobbins disappeared Jan. 26 after crashing the car into a tree and a parked vehicle about a quarter-mile north of the courthouse. His father was arrested Jan. 27 at his home.
