Newhall Municipal Court was evacuated for 1-1/2 hours Monday when a large package arrived in the mail for a deputy district attorney, raising suspicion in part because her name was misspelled on the address.

A sheriff's arson and explosives squad was called, but found that the package, mailed from Houston, contained a two-inch-thick stack of documents from a Texas man requesting an investigation into the death of his uncle, said Deputy District Attorney Terry White.

The bomb scare also spurred the evacuations of the neighboring Valencia Library and satellite offices of the Los Angeles County health, probation and building and safety departments. The offices were closed from 1 to 3:35 p.m.

Mirna Castellanos traveled from the San Fernando Valley for business at the courthouse, yet found her path blocked by sheriff's deputies clearing the county center.

Linda Gettelsen, two children in tow, had headed to the library straight from school to get a jump start on homework.

``I finally (got time) so we can get projects done early, and there's a bomb?'' Gettelsen said. ``I give up.''

At the nearby Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station, Judge Floyd Baxter was in his robes prepared to arraign inmates who had been bused to the courthouse for afternoon hearings, said sheriff's Lt. Steve Dolan.

The suspicious-looking box, sent via U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, was larger than most communications with the prosecutors' office, White said, pointing to a typical request for investigation - a two-page handwritten letter. Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Ulfig, who the box had been mailed to, had no business with anyone in Houston, White said. That coupled with the misspelling of her name as ``Ulpig'' prompted further suspicion.
