filed a request for a temporary restraining order temporary restraining order: see injunction.  against the Animal Defense League to block it from protesting at the homes of Hahn or any other city official.

A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20 on whether a permanent injunction permanent injunction n. a final order of a court that a person or entity refrain from certain activities permanently or take certain actions (usually to correct a nuisance) until completed.  against the protesters should be issued.

Aides to Hahn said the mayor wouldn't comment on the order, but said his security personnel were concerned about the potential threat.

However, the Animal Defense League - which has targeted Hahn and officials with the Animal Services Department to protest the city's continued euthanasia of animals - said they would defy any order.

``This is McCarthyism at its worst,'' ADL spokesman Jerry Vlasak Jerry Vlasak is an American physician, animal rights activist, environmentalist, and press officer for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office. ``We have a constitutionally protected right of free speech. Just because (the city) doesn't like our message, doesn't give them the right to silence us.''

Last Saturday, a group of about 12 ADL activists - many wearing masks and carrying signs - descended on Hahn's house in San Pedro to protest the city's policies on animal protection. Hahn's neighbors grew angry at the protest and sprayed the demonstrators with water from powerful squirt guns known as Super Soakers before the group left.
