and presented Norris with a certificate of achievement from the city of Santa Clarita. Norris also received letters from over a dozen local and national government officials and a flag that had flown over the nation's Capitol from Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon's office.

Whitmore, 18, is a member of Troop 496 and was required to earn five previous Scout ranks, a minimum of 21 merit badges and organize a service project for the community in order to earn the rank of Eagle.

For his service project, Whitmore organized a blood and bone marrow registry drive for Kendall Biby, the sister of a close friend. Kendall, a student at Placerita Junior High, suffers from aplastic anemia aplastic anemia

The drive was held Aug. 16, 2003, and the response from the community was tremendous. The hours had to be extended to accommodate all the people who wanted to donate, with 160 pints of blood collected and 137 bone marrow registrations.

While Kendall is still waiting for a perfect match, at least two people who were registered during the drive matched others in need of bone marrow transplants.

Whitmore organized the event with the help of his family and the Biby family. To publicize the event, he had posters and fliers made, which he distributed to schools, his church and by direct mail. He also arranged to have lunch brought in for those who donated.
