COURT IN WIDNES TO BE CLOSED.WIDNES Widnes (wĭd`nĭs), city (1991 pop. 55,973), Halton, NW England, on the Mersey River. It is an important alkali-processing center. Justice Secretary Jack Straw included it in a list of 21 courts nationwide which he is considering shutting down after consultation. Speaking in a Commons statement, Mr Straw said: "Such courts are significantly under utilised." He added: "In all cases there are alternative courts within a reasonable travelling distance where services will continue to be provided."
