Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Daily News Staff Writer

The Simi Valley Police Department The Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) is the police department of the city of Simi Valley, California. The department currently has over 120 sworn officers, and more than 65 support personnel[1]. The department has a patrol area that covers over 39 square miles.  and its supporters honored seven very different people Thursday, some civilians and uniformed officers, who all displayed courage and quick thinking under pressure, and dedication to the community and the department.

The seven were recognized at the third annual Police-Community Partnerships Awards Luncheon at the Radisson Hotel.

``It's an honor because it comes from people that do the same job, that go out and stick their necks on the line,'' said Detective Frank Ahlvers, the department's Officer of the Year. ``For them to stand up and say that I'm the one they chose as the best this year, it's great.''

About 20 minutes later, Hogsett was making a delivery to a T-shirt store in the same complex when he saw a woman who matched the robber's description - recognizable even though she had changed clothes. He notified authorities and she was arrested.

Hogsett said that getting involved was a natural instinct instinct, term used generally to indicate an innate tendency to action, or pattern of behavior, elicited by specific stimuli and fulfilling vital needs of an organism.  for him, and he didn't hesitate to act.

``It's like someone robbing your mother, your brother or sister,'' he said. ``You take it personally. If I didn't do anything . . . and if it had been worse because of it, I would have felt very, very bad.

``It's like a dog, territorial. A dog may not ever leave his back yard, but if someone gets in, he feels threatened.''

Although they may not have expressed it quite the same way, each of the nominees said their work gives them a sense of satisfaction to know that they are helping people and, in a way, taking care of their own piece of Simi Valley.

Others honored Thursday were Trevor Shalhoob, Explorer of the Year; Shirlee Donovan, Volunteer of the Year; Michael Apisa, Civilian Employee of the Year; Officer John St. Laurent, winner of the Chief's Award; and Officer Don Anderson, winner of the Michael F. Clark Award.

Police Chief Randy Adams said that the awards are important because they show that good work is being recognized, and they give the city's children role models to look up to.
