COUPLES RENEW VOWS; MAHONY CALLS ENDURING MARRIAGES AN `INSPIRATION TO YOUNG'.

In fact, it had been 56 years since their wedding day, and about 58 since they first met on a New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. ``Everything we've done, we've done together,'' said Eunice Prideaux, 75, of Woodland Hills. ``We love being together, even if we just stay at home and hold hands.''

, applauded the couples for their commitment to each other and their faiths. He compared their love to ``shining brilliant lights.''

``In our society there are many who say it is impossible to be in a commitment to a person for five years, 10 years or even two months in some instances,'' Mahony said, prompting laughter. ``You are (an) inspiration to young people today, that yes, it is possible to make a lifelong commitment.''

The church pews were packed with some 1,400 people, including friends and family.

Some couples donned simple blue suits and sweater sets. Others got decked out for the occasion, strutting around in tuxedos and white-beaded evening dresses.

Mahony jokingly dubbed Cecilia, 87, and Howard Kainz, 90, the day's ``winners.'' The Camarillo couple were married 68 years ago during the Great Depression in a downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  church at 4:30 a.m.

Today, they have three children, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

While enjoying cake at a group reception after the Mass, the Kainzes shared their secrets to nuptial nup·tial

``It's patience and understanding each other,'' said Cecilia Kainz, who last renewed vows with hubby Howard three years ago. ``You have to work things out before you get mad. . . . We've had a very happy marriage. It's something we're just proud of.''
