COUPLES AND PRICE OUT OF U.S. OPEN.


Two of the biggest attractions in golf are out of the U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. These include:

. Fred Couples Frederick Stephen Couples (born October 3, 1959) is an American professional golfer and former World No. 1 who competes on the PGA Tour. He has won numerous events, and is most famous for winning the 1992 Masters Tournament. , arguably the most popular American golfer, and Nick Price, the No. 4 player in the world, both withdrew from the tournament, which begins Thursday at the Oakland Hills Country Club Oakland Hills Country Club, a private golf club in Bloomfield Hills, Oakland County, Michigan, has hosted many prestigious professional golf tournaments throughout its history. The Oakland Hills grounds crew maintains two superb courses, designated the North and South Course.  in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Couples is suffering from back pains unrelated to the disc problems that have plagued him for the past three years.

Price, who has been suffering from a persistent virus and severe allergies, did not improve over the weekend after withdrawing from the Buick Classic on Friday. Last week he complained of lethargy and lack of strength. ``I've been walking around like a zombie A computer that has been covertly taken over in order to perform some nefarious task. Price will be replaced in the field by Tom Purtzer. Randy Leen of Dayton, Ohio, will replace Couples, becoming the sixth amateur in the 156-man field. Leen is a 19-year-old sophomore at Indiana University.
