COUPLE RECALLED AS LOVING LIFE RETIRED LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS KILLED IN CRASH.

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- Mike and Suzy Hayes loved to travel and lived for the outdoors. So they decided to build their dream home along the Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  coast with panoramic views of the ocean and fly there in their private plane whenever they wanted.

But on a trip earlier this month to the isolated site where they planned to spend many of their twilight years together, tragedy struck the retired law enforcement couple.

In the morning fog of Aug. 4, Suzy Hayes took off in their Cessna 182 from a small landing strip in Shelter Cove, site of their vacation property Vacation property is a niche in the real estate market dealing with residences used for holiday vacations (eg. beach house). The rapid development of the Internet and technologies such as telephony and personal digital assistants that allow people to work from home since circa 1995 . Soon after, the plane crashed, killing the Hayeses.

On Thursday, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police officers, golfers, pilots and friends from throughout the Simi Valley area are expected to attend funeral services for the couple and pay tribute to two people who got the most out of life.

``They were extremely energetic people who loved camping, flying, golfing, traveling,'' said their daughter, Angela Perez of Simi Valley. ``They had so much energy and just loved life, and they lived it to the fullest. They were friendly with everybody. Practically everyone in Simi Valley knew them.''

Suzy, 57, and Mike, 62, were married 27 years. She was a retired civilian employee for the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

, a niece of the Hayeses, said her aunt and uncle were always supportive of their relatives, including a nephew who has been serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

``I used to do a lot of camping with them,'' Barrios said. ``They love the outdoors. They encouraged people to do their best and love life, and they really lived what they preached.''

The couple kept their single-engine plane at Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  and used it to travel across the country on golfing trips and other excursions.

``They loved the ocean, they loved the redwoods,'' Barrios said regarding the Shelter Cove area where the plane crashed. ``It's a very beautiful place, very serene.''

Kerry Coffman, a pilot and real estate agent at Keller Williams, said the Hayeses ``were the nicest people you would ever want to meet.''

The Hayeses are survived by their daughters, Perez and Kimberly and Shana Hayes of North Dakota, and their son Darrin Hayes of Santa Clarita.
