, 20, killed John Frederick Gailer, 65, in the course of robbing him.

``He was purported to have a few thousand dollars,'' Deputy District Attorney Myron Jenkins said.

Gailer was beaten to death with a pipe while visiting Wood and Ellis in the couple's 11th Street East apartment, Jenkins said.

Gailer, whom deputies originally described as a transientbut who Jenkins said lived in Palmdale, was found dead about 7 p.m. Friday in the apartment of Wood and Ellis, officials said. Deputies said the incident started out as a verbal argument between the three, which escalated into a physical altercation.

``He was struck in the head and sustained severe head trauma,'' Los Angeles County Coroner's spokesman Scott Carrier said.

Gailer's murder was the seventh in the Antelope Valley this year - a pace that if carried for the remainder of the year would make 1999's murder count the lowest since six killings in 1987.
