``My mom hit some dirt and got stuck in soft dirt,'' said Jose Ortiz, the couple's son and Alicia's uncle. ``They went back to our friend's home and took the lock off the door and made a fire.''

The Kern County Sheriff's Department was called Monday when Jose Ortiz discovered his parents and niece had not returned. Search and rescue teams from Kern Valley and east Kern County searched through the night for the couple.

The search teams found the family at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday.

``I'm very grateful everybody is OK,'' Jose Ortiz said. ``My mom wants to know who they (the rescuers) are so she can thank them. She is very grateful and they were very nice.''
