Antonovich, whose 5th District includes the Santa Clarita Valley, is in discussions with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Agency and former shelter operators about setting up at a county flood control yard in the 21100 block of Centre Pointe Parkway.

County officials called a meeting with the agencies involved Friday to consider the $160,000 proposal, said Tony Bell, an Antonovich spokesman.

``We need to find a solution for the homeless problem now,'' Bell said.

The facility would be managed by the Santa Clarita Community Development Corp., which operated a seasonal homeless shelter at temporary sites throughout Santa Clarita for seven years until city officials closed it.

The flood control yard suggestion came after the homeless services agency commissioners on Dec. 10 rejected a county-backed proposal to open a 120-bed emergency shelter at the Sylmar Armory. About 40 beds would be reserved for Santa Clarita's homeless.

Members of the joint city-county commission feared the move would set precedent for surrounding municipalities to export homeless to the city of Los Angeles

Mark Young, vice president of the Santa Clarita Community Development Corp., said the group has had ongoing discussions with the county about securing a temporary site.

``The discussions certainly got a big boost following the meeting with LAHSA LAHSA Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (California)  on the Sylmar (shelter idea),'' he said.

The group could have the shelter up and running by Jan. 10 if all parties agree on the plan in the next two weeks, he said.

The Santa Clarita shelter operated the past two years at the Via Princessa Metrolink station. But the Santa Clarita City Council declined to extend the lease through this winter, citing opposition from nearby residents.

Several attempts by city officials to find a permanent location also failed, and the makeshift shelter was dismantled.

City officials instead offered $36,000 to fund a Lutheran Social Services plan that includes motel vouchers, counseling and busing local homeless to shelters in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley
