The county gained 4,400 wage and salary jobs in October, with the service sector posting the largest gains by adding 3,300 jobs.

close to the 1990 rate, before the recession,'' said Dee Johnson, Ventura Ventura (vĕnt`rə), city (1990 pop. 92,575), seat of Ventura co., SW Calif., on the Pacific coast in a farm and oil region; inc. 1866.  County's labor market labor market A place where labor is exchanged for wages; an LM is defined by geography, education and technical expertise, occupation, licensure or certification requirements, and job experience  analyst. ``Things are very positive, especially when you consider that the county added more than 4,000 jobs in the past month.''

The increase in the number of wage and salary jobs, and the lowered unemployment rate at 6.6 percent mirrored lowered unemployment nationally, which dropped to 4.4 percent, the lowest rate in one year. The total number of jobs rose from 383,400 to 387,500 over the month of October.

Most of those gains could be attributed to the final round of school hires showing up on the county employment books, Johnson said.

``Some districts submit payrolls later, and some are even adding employees in late September and early October,'' Johnson said.

In the service sector, jobs rose 1.7 percent to 203,300 jobs. In addition to education jobs, engineering and management gained 500 jobs, and finance, trade and real estate added 500.

In an additional sign of a strong county economy, the construction sector posted strong one-month gains - adding 400 jobs - during a season when such jobs sometimes drop off, Johnson said.

``Sometimes we see a seasonal drop in these jobs, but more importantly, this was a sector hard hit by the recession, and it's now added 800 jobs over the past 12 months for a 7.1 percent increase over the previous year.''

Overall, the 12-month job gains were strong for all sectors, Johnson said, with only the government sector under services posting losses of 700 jobs. The manufacturing sector came in second to the service sector with 12-month gains of 1,400 jobs, an increase of 4.6 percent. Within manufacturing, the high-tech sector added 200 jobs in October, an increase of 100 jobs over the previous October. Manufacturers in the high-tech sector include computer, office, communications and electronics equipment and aircraft, and missile and navigation equipment.

Within the county, Moorpark had the lowest unemployment at 5 percent, while Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  had the highest, 10.5 percent.

Although the jobs outlook remains strong, at 6.6 percent the county's unemployment rate ranked 28th in the state.
