A county multiagency task force led by the department seized boxes of equipment and medication in Canoga Park that was allegedly used by a 38-year-old woman while performing dental work as patients sat in an orange recliner near a children's bunk bed. It was the first raid of its kind in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. since the county launched a crackdown on such illegal operations last year, authorities said. ``The No. 1 danger of an operation like this is the potential harm to the patients,'' Hamai said. ``The sad thing in this case is all of the medication stored in the little boy's bedroom. He could have gotten ahold of a syringe and become very sick.'' Saturday's raids were the most recent in a countywide crackdown on unlicensed dentists, Hamai said. Six operations have been shut down since county Supervisors Gloria Molina and Zev Yaroslavsky sanctioned the task force last year. There are about 100 investigations in motion, but the number of illegal dental operations could be much larger, officials said. County and law enforcement officials entered the first-floor apartment about 1:30 p.m. in the 6600 block of De Soto Avenue. The unidentified woman wasn't performing any dental work, but they found piles of equipment and bags of medicine as well as the soiled orange recliner, authorities said. ``She had bags filled with pain medicine, stomach medicine, anti-infectants, injectable penicillin, antibiotics,'' said Dr. Gregory Thompson, director of the county's regional Drug Information Center. ``One of the bags was in the cupboard next to the coffee cups. The other one was in her 3-year-old boy's bedroom next to the recliner.'' The woman was booked on a misdemeanor charge of practicing dentistry without a license and was released, police said. She could face heavy fines along with a prohibition against carrying on her dental operation. If she's caught a second time, the charge will be elevated to a felony and she could face jail time, police said. The task force is run by the Department of Health Services, the Health Hazardous Materials team, the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here.
