COUNTY STRIKE MAY LEAVE COUPLES AT THE ALTAR.

Byline: Alexa Haussler Staff Writer

Officials have a request for couples planning to marry in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County after today - get out of town.

And they don't mean it figuratively.

With county employees threatening a strike Wednesday that could shut down government offices, Los Angeles County officials urge couples to get marriage licenses in Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States

counties,'' Grace Chavez, a spokeswoman for the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, said Monday.

If the strike occurs, couples who arrive at the marriage license counter will get directions to offices in four other counties.

``The possibility of a countywide strike . . . has made it necessary to think outside the box to determine alternative methods to delivery of services,'' County Recorder County Recorder may mean any of the following, in the context of a county:

Conny McCormack said in a prepared statement issued by her office.

Sondra Ziegler, church administrator for Woodland Hills Community Church, said she has no doubt that some couples waited until the last minute and might even have to postpone their weddings.

``Some people have this stuff planned way in advance. But people that are last-minute-type people and don't plan ahead, they are definitely going to be up the creek.''

Ziegler said she is catering the wedding of a couple who are getting married Saturday and haven't yet obtained their marriage license.

``I hope they can get it,'' Ziegler said. ``It just galls me to think that people can literally ruin the beginning of someone's lives because of strikes.''

Couples can get a regular marriage license anywhere in the state, Chavez said. But couples who want a confidential marriage license - a type of license that is not a public record, and requires a court order even to be seen - must marry in the county where they obtain it.

That could be ``devastating'' to couples who plan to marry and want confidential licenses, said the Rev. Larry Jones Larry Jones is also the real name of Atlanta Braves player Chipper Jones.

``The confidential license is the only one that a wedding chapel can buy for you,'' Jones said. ``We don't have enough marriage licenses and if they go on strike on the 11th, we're doomed.''

Chavez had no estimate of how many couples might be affected if a countywide strike occurs as union leaders plan.

She said five couples were asked to reschedule re·sched·ule

that we can get back to the table and reach a settlement or at least a framework for a settlement that would enable us to avert a strike of that sort,'' said Bart Diener, assistant general manager of Service Employees International Union, Local 660.

Still, both sides appeared far apart.
