COUNTY SETTLES IN LABOR TALKS.

Ventura County government has approved new contracts for six of its nine labor unions labor union: see union, labor.  and reached tentative agreement with another, leaving only two groups still negotiating with supervisors.

In the coming weeks, county supervisors are expected to ratify an agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) is a labor union within the AFL-CIO representing primarily construction workers who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, surveyors, and stationary engineers, who maintain heating and other systems in buildings and , Local 501. The union has worked without a contract since December 1997.

The contract calls for carpenters, plumbers, electricians, building-maintenance workers and mechanics to receive a 7 percent across-the-board salary hike for the life of the contract, which will expire in November 2000, plus $75 each.

Members also would be paid 2-1/2 times their hourly pay for each hour they work on holidays. They used to be paid for a maximum of eight hours regardless of how long they were on the clock.

In return, the union has agreed to reduce the number of vacation hours its 175 members may carry over to the next year from 440 to 400.

Earlier this month, 300 probation and corrections officers, who had been without a contract since December 1997, received a 7-1/2 percent pay hike through December 2000.
