COUNTY SEES RISE IN FRAUD REPORT CITES WORKERS, CONTRACTORS IN 26 CASES.

County workers and contractors committed 26 cases of fraud in the third substantiated, 48 that were not substantiated and 35 that were not quarter of the year, compared with 18 in 2002, according to according to

The auditor-controller's fraud investigators opened 148 investigations from July 1 through Sept. 30 and closed 109 cases, including 26 that were investigated due to insufficient information.

The substantiated cases included a senior services employee suspected of misdirecting $220,000 in child-support payments to his home and checking account, officials said. The case was referred to the District Attorney's Office for criminal prosecution.

The investigators detect $3 million to $4 million a year in fraud and waste while the county's welfare fraud investigators detect $14 million to $19 million.

Other substantiated cases include:

--A child-support worker suspected of stealing more than $30,000 in payments intended for parents. The employee was fired and criminal charges are pending.
