COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION TO HEAR MORE ON NEWHALL RANCH.

Byline: Daily News

Testimony will resume today before the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission on the massive Newhall Ranch project, planned for west of Valencia and abutting the Ventura County line.

The commission will meet at 9 a.m. in Room 150 of the county Hall of Records, 320 W. Temple St., Los Angeles. A vote is not expected today on the project, proposed by The Newhall Land and Farming Company The Newhall Land and Farming Company is a land management company based in Valencia, California, United States. The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state. .

Issues being argued as the commission considers the 25,000-home project include its potential burdens on the water supply, local school systems, roadways, air quality and the ecology of the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:
  • Santa Clara River (California), a river in Southern California, United States.
  • Santa Clara River (Utah), a river in Utah, United States
  • Carmen River, a river in Mexico that is sometimes called the Santa Clara River
.

The 19-square-mile area is roughly bordered by Highway 126 to the north, the Santa Susana Mountains The Santa Susana Mountains are a transverse range of mountains in southern California, north of the city of Los Angeles, in the United States. The range runs east-west separating the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley on its south from Santa Clara River Valley to the north and  to the south, the Los Angeles/Ventura county line to the west and the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  to the east.

Newhall Ranch would house about 70,000 people across the 12,000-acre area, making it the largest project of its type to apply in Los Angeles County. Groundbreaking is set for 2000, and work on the project would continue over 25 years.

The Planning Commission eventually will make a recommendation on the project to the county Board of Supervisors The examples and perspective in this article or section may represent an unduly geographically limited view of the subject.
