With a $100,000 commitment from the Mobil Oil Corp., sun worshippers and surfers will likely get another Ventura County beach to call their own.

The Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday will consider parks officials' plan to assume control of the Mobil Piers beach, using the oil giant's grant to transform it into a public recreation area.

Parking and concession sales would generate about $54,000, offsetting estimated maintenance costs, parks officials say.

Since the 1930s, the state has leased a nearly milelong stretch of beach to Mobil for its offshore drilling Offshore drilling typically refers to the act of extracting resources, primarily oil, in an ocean or lake. Controversy

And for decades, the public has illegally used an access road built and owned by Mobil to gain access to the beach, located about 10 miles north of Ventura Harbor.

``They're trespassers,'' said Blake Boyle, county parks manager. ``But over the years, Mobil has allowed it to happen.''

The company stopped pumping oil from the site a couple years ago and is seeking state approval to dismantle dis·man·tle

In an agreement with the county, Mobil pledged $100,000 to upgrade the area, Plough said.

``Mobil just thinks it would be a public benefit to continue to provide access to that section of the beach,'' he said, adding that the company is not obligated ob·li·gate

Boyle said state officials are receptive to his office's request for a 25-year lease of the land.

The plans include widening the two-lane access road and installing utilities, a security gate and parking spaces for 110 cars and 10 recreational vehicles.

``It looks like a good deal for the county, so I'm going to support it,'' said county Supervisor John Flynn.
