COUNTY PANEL MAY GET PEDERSON; FORMER SANTA CLARITA MAYOR RECOMMENDED FOR PLANNING APPOINTMENT.

The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich Michael Dennis Antonovich (born 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors representing the Fifth District, which covers northern Los Angeles County, the Antelope, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, and parts of the San Fernando and San , who has known Pederson for more than 20 years, recommended the Valencia resident without interviewing anyone else, said Antonovich's planning deputy Dave Vannatta.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider the appointment Tuesday.

Pederson is replacing Palmdale resident Pat Russell Pat Russell served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1969 until 1987. It was the longest period that any woman has served on the Council. She was the also the first woman to be succeeded by another woman in the governing body's history.

Pederson said he supports ``responsible growth'' in the area.

``I have lived or worked out here since 1954, so I have seen the area change and I know its history,'' Pederson said. ``I certainly believe that I will be in a position of cooperation with the city of Santa Clarita on issues that affect the city and the county.''

He said he would want to focus on air and water quality while on the Planning Commission, which guides long-range development of the county's unincorporated areas.

``What I would like to see is the area develop very slowly with a great amount of attention given to the details of the environment,'' Pederson said. ``I think I would be very careful to the kind of approval that would be given to projects out here.''

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is a local law enforcement agency that serves Los Angeles County, California.
 captain, Pederson worked as an operations lieutenant in the Santa Clarita station from 1976 to 1980. From 1980 to 1984, he was commander of the county jail complex now known as the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center.

Pederson served as mayor of Santa Clarita from 1992 to 1996 before being foreman of the Los Angeles County grand jury for the 1997-98 year.

Along with serving on the county Planning Commission, Pederson plans to work as an arbitrator for the National Association of Security Dealers after the first of the year.
