Kaye Michelson, spokeswoman for the county Department of Animal Care and Control, said the county took 10 dogs to its shelter in Baldwin Park.

Some animal activists had alleged the county euthanized a large number of dogs over the weekend to make room for the pets from New Orleans, but Michelson denied that.

Adoptions of any animals from New Orleans will not become final until Dec. 31, giving original owners time to claim their pets.
