The Board of Supervisors is the body governing counties in the U.S.
is scheduled to consider approving a living-wage ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
today that would guarantee workers at least $8 an hour with medical insurance and $10 without.

The board also will determine whether the ordinance should include an automatic cost-of-living increase and whether it should cover in-home health-care workers.

Supervisors Steve Bennett The name Steve Bennett refers to more than one person:
  • Steve Bennett, the head of Starchaser, a company involved in space development and tourism.
  • Steve Bennett, manga artist and head of ill-fated manga publisher Studio Ironcat.
  • Steve Bennett, football referee.
, John Flynn and Kathy Long generally favor the ordinance, which needs just three votes to pass.

The plan - which would cost county taxpayers $1.2 million a year - was scheduled for a vote last week. However, the board delayed the issue by a week so local chamber of commerce officials could present their view that the proposal would hurt small businesses.

Chief Administrative Officer A chief administrative officer (CAO) is responsible for administrative management of private, public or governmental corporations. The CAO is one of the highest ranking members of an organization, managing daily operations and usually reporting directly to the chief executive  John Johnston

 for fiscal 2001.

Adding in-home health-care workers could boost the cost by an additional $4.3 million to $4.7 million, and costs are still undetermined for adopting an automatic cost-of-living increase, which officials suggest should be added in 50-cent increments.

Proponents of the ordinance say the county figures are overestimated and that a county living wage is needed for working families to become self-sufficient.
