COUNTY MAY DROP JIM BROWN DEAL.

James Nathaniel Brown (born February 17, 1936) is an American former professional football player who has also made his mark as an actor and social activist.
 following an audit that questioned the effectiveness of Brown's Amer-I-Can Foundation in reducing racially motivated riots at a Castaic jail.

The audit released Tuesday said the program violated a number of contract requirements - including providing less than half of the promised number of hours of inmate INMATE. ``We recommend that the sheriff work with County Counsel to evaluate whether the county can recover payments made to Amer-I-Can based on Amer-I-Can's not providing all of the services required by the contract,'' Auditor-Controller Tyler McCauley wrote.

County Sheriff's Department Correctional Services Division Chief Marc Klugman said the program's contract expired recently and that he was awaiting direction from the Board of Supervisors.

 during a riot in the Pitchess Detention Facility. The $300,000 annual contract was to provide 60 hours to 90 hours of training for inmates and deputies to help prevent riots.

Auditors noted that the number of riots and other disturbances at the North County Correctional Facility North County Correctional Facility (NCCF) is a Los Angeles County Jail, run by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Located approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, it is one of four jails located within the Pitchess Detention Center (named after former  had dropped 40 percent since the program started, but they could not determine whether the program actually caused the reduction.

Auditors said the drop may have been the result of changes in jail management, inmate housing and new educational programs.

``Our people think there has been a reduction in disturbances at our facilities, but they aren't sure if it's attributable entirely or partially to Amer-I-Can,'' Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky Zev Yaroslavsky (born December 21, 1948) is a Los Angeles County politician. He served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1975 until 1994, when he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. He was preceded in both offices by Edmund D. Edelman.  said. ``I'm sure they've had some impact, but the audit points out there are deficiencies as well.''

Brown did not return calls for comment.
