COUNTY LINE PROJECT BACKED.

Byline: Amy Collins Daily News Staff Writer

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County planning commissioners indicated Wednesday they will approve the 24,000-home Newhall Ranch, essentially a new community with shopping and industrial properties, in the hills northeast of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

``I feel this is a pretty good compromise,'' said Commissioner Cheryl Vargo, who in April had asked for a major overhaul of the project. ``I feel you came a long way to address my concerns and I feel pretty comfortable with this.''

Since the project was proposed a year ago, 867 homes have been deleted from the river corridor, a meadow and in sensitive high-country areas. Commercial space has also been reduced and land will be deeded to public agencies earlier in the building process.

Newhall Ranch project would stretch five miles along Highway 126, from the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. It would have an 18-hole golf course, a 15-acre lake, a dozen parks, two fire stations, a water reclamation Reclamation

plant, schools and thousands of acres of open space. It would have a maximum of 24,351 homes and 5.7 million square feet of commercial and industrial business development.

The only opposition Wednesday came from Donald Toy, Supervisor Gloria Molina's representative on the Los Angeles Regional Planning regional planning: see city planning.  Commission. Toy said he is still concerned about the density, the loss of greenbelt area, whether an agreement will be reached to prevent school overcrowding overcrowding

It had appeared that the commission was ready to approve the project Wednesday until Toy said he wanted a chart listing the elements of the original Newhall Ranch plan and how much it's changed.

``I don't want people to get the impression I'm trying to roadblock this thing, I just want all the information to make a good decision,'' Toy said in an interview after the meeting.

The commission voted 4-0 to hold a public hearing July 28 on the development agreement and to continue its review of the project.
