These are a few of the cases detailed by auditors in the county's quarterly Fraud Hotline Status Report issued Wednesday.

Investigators opened 162 investigations from April 1 to June 30 and closed 106 cases, including 25 that were substantiated. Of those, five employees were fired, four resigned, two were suspended, three were counseled, two were required to pay restitution In the context of Criminal Law, state programs under which an offender is required, as a condition of his or her sentence, to repay money or donate services to the victim or society; with respect to maritime law, the restoration of articles lost by jettison, done when the  and two were referred to the District Attorney's Office for prosecution.

The hotline, initiated by Supervisor Michael D. People can make anonymous complaints by calling (800) 544-6861.

``While we had more new investigations this period, there was roughly the same number of substantiated cases as last quarter,'' said Tony Bell, Antonovich's spokesman. ``The numbers look consistently strong and show success in protecting the taxpayers' interests and combating fraud.''

In other cases, auditors found:

--An animal care and control employee is expected to be fired for using his position to facilitate dog boarding from which he profited. The employee also admitted to making audio recordings of fellow employees without their consent.

--A community and senior services employee was discharged for operating a residential-care facility in which he had a financial interest and while on medical leave. He was also a designated payee The person who is to receive the stated amount of money on a check, bill, or note.

--A health department manager did not disclose honorariums and paid travel expenses on his statements of economic interest and agreed to declare such income in the future.
