PANORAMA CITY -- Saying it was time to treat the West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis.  scare in Panorama City like "an emergency," county officials revealed a plan Wednesday to immediately remove overgrown overgrown

In its announcement, the Los Angeles County Vector Control District said that in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, feeding off algae algae (ăl`jē) [plural of Lat. alga=seaweed], a large and diverse group of primarily aquatic plantlike organisms. These organisms were previously classified as a primitive subkingdom of the plant kingdom, the thallophytes (plants that  and bacteria.

Wednesday's action comes a day after county Department of Public Works officials gave conflicting reasons for not quickly clearing the wash before their permit-allowed Sept. 1 date.

That date comes after the nesting season for many birds in the area, officials said Wednesday.

, said although it's true that his agency has to get permission from the state Department of Fish and Game to remove any vegetation from the wash before Sept. 1 -- contrary to earlier reports from his department -- it's not that difficult to do.

"Through our working relationship with (Fish and Game), we still have to get clearance from them, but we can get it from them after the fact," Lee said.

Officials from the county Vector Control Division said they learned late Friday that about 14 out of the 17 Panorama City positive West Nile mosquito pool readings came from the wash area in Panorama City.

On Monday, Vector Control notified the Public Works Department, posted warning signs in Panorama City and treated the area with larvae-killing insecticide. A county-appointed biologist was on site Wednesday to assist in removing vegetation from the wash.

The biologist was there "to make sure the work we're doing was not going to have an adverse effect on nesting birds," Lee said.
