COUNTY HEARS PUBLIC TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF NEWHALL RANCH PLAN.

Promising thousands of new jobs and millions of dollars in surplus county tax revenues, the Newhall Land and Farming Co. urged Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County planners Wednesday to approve its 25,000-home Newhall Ranch community, the biggest in county history.

More than 350 people attended the first public hearing on the 12,000-acre development planned south of state Highway 126 and west of the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  to the Ventura County border.

Newhall Land officials said its proposed development would bring 19,300 permanent jobs to the region and provide the county with $301 million in surplus tax revenue over the next quarter century.

``It will be a significant contribution to the economic health of the entire Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. The community would feature five villages with names such as Riverwood and The Mesas, offering a mix of shops, restaurants and offices. Residents also would be able to enjoy a golf course, a 15-acre man-made lake and a 50-mile network of pedestrian and bike paths.

``People want to live by nature,'' Harter said.

, construction could begin in 2000, reaching build out in 25 years. Some Santa Clarita Valley residents already are looking forward to the project's promise of shopping and entertainment.

``The entire project can only effect everybody to the good,'' said Jim Meredith, a Val Verde resident who lives next to the site. ``Rather than go eight miles into Castaic or Valencia we could do our shopping and entertainment at Newhall Ranch.''

 hired a full-time planner to monitor the project and allocated $37,000 to county attorneys for an ongoing review of the plan.

Although Ventura County has no authority over the project, officials hope to work with Los Angeles County planners on environmental issues, such as air and water pollution and traffic.
