COUNTY GROUP APPROVES NEW CASTAIC DISTRICT.

Byline: Nicholas Grudin Staff Writer

CASTAIC - Deteriorating storefronts and poorly planned neighborhoods could be a thing of the past for the Castaic region, whose new community standards Community standards are local norms bounding acceptable conduct. Sometimes these standards can itemized in a list that states the community's values and sets guidelines for participation in the community.  district was unanimously approved this week by the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Regional Planning regional planning: see city planning.  Commission.

The Castaic Area Community Standards District will help protect ridge lines from development, increase the area's minimum lot size for homes and ban giant pole billboards, among other things. The new regulations must still go before county counsel and the Board of Supervisors for final approval.

The town council has been working since 1998 on the special district, and ran into many impediments along the way, making Wednesday's approval even more gratifying grat·i·fy

``It's great because there's a lot of people who have worked long and hard on it,'' Tucker said. ``It will give developers and residents a good idea of where Castaic wants to go.''

``What it does is that rather than going to the lowest common standard allowed countywide, it will give specific standards for the Castaic area,'' Lewis said.

County officials said that the CSD would create more of a community feel for Castaic.

``Approval of the CSD will give the local community more control over development in their community, beyond traditional zoning regulations,'' said Paul Novak, planning deputy for Antonovich.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider the CSD on March 23.
