COUNTY FAIR KICKS OFF RUN.

Byline: Angie Valencia Staff Writer

Ah, fair food. Funnel cakes. Turkey legs. Cotton candy. And sow's milk - at least for 10 wriggling piglets at Uncle Leo's Children's Barnyard.

Opening day of the Ventura County Fair brought in family after family to stroll the fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground. , taking in free entertainment, contests and rides and to gaze at Uncle Leo's animals - goats, ducks and lambs, along with the mother pig and her brood.

``It's lunchtime,'' announced Teri Carcano of Malibu, who brought 2- year-old Adele to witness scenes from farmyard life. ``The babies are hungry.''

Wednesday kicked off the fair's 12-day run at Seaside Park. Organizers expect the event - now in its 129th year - to attract a record 330,000 people through Aug. 15. Last year, the fair drew 308,000 people.

Dads pushed strollers. Moms wiped the ketchup off their children's faces. And grandparents grandparents nplabuelos mpl

loosened their wallets for a day of midway rides, game booths, roasted sweet corn and candy.

``The fair is very family oriented,'' said Shaun Patterson, 45, as he pushed his 1-year-old son, Jack, in a stroller. ``I've been coming every year since I was 15.

``Now I want to show my kids an all-around good time.''

Flats have returned this year, promising: ``Rain or swine the sow must go on.''

Children cheered and giggled, while the pigs stretched out, limbered up and competed for a chance to be on ``Snorts Illustrated.''

Rebecca Tello of Ventura spent opening day with granddaughter Maya, 3.

``It's a nice day,'' Tello said. ``You only get it once a year. It's something nostalgic.''
