Many weekend visitors to the Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. County Fair) is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California, held every September. It is a carnival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. The 2007 L.A.  will pay up to $2 more for admission this year - a 20 percent increase on some gate prices - to cover the rising cost of electricity, officials said Thursday Thursday: see week. .

Power costs will also contribute to a 50-cent hike for soft drinks and could increase some food prices when the fair opens this fall.

To make up for the expense, the fair plans to offer a first-day admission price of $1, and various discounts the first weekend.

The fair is set for Sept. 7-23.

Adult gate prices on Saturdays, and during the day on Sundays, will rise from $10 to $12, Talarico said.

Weekend prices for children between the ages of 6 and 12 will increase from $5 to $6, but remain at $5 during the week.

``Utility costs went up $1 million last year and this year nearly $2 million,'' Talarico said.

Soft drink prices at the fair are also slated to jump 50 cents - small drinks will go for $2, medium for $2.50 and large for $3, Talarico said.

Food prices in general are expected to take a moderate jump, officials said, but they are set individually by each concessionaire.

Chuck Giordano, owner of C and C Concessions, which operates at the fair, said the cost of doing business is up due to various factors this year.

``2001 is going to be a tough year for the small-businessman no matter where he is,'' Giordano said. ``The cost of doing business has gotten out of hand.''
