COUNTY ACQUIRES PARKLAND ACREAGE PARCEL PURCHASED NEAR CHATSWORTH.

Byline: Troy Anderson Staff Writer

Adding to what eventually will be a 316-acre swath of open space near Chatsworth, Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday approved the sale of 47 acres to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority for $100,000.

The property, which the county acquired in 1952 as a result of tax default, is in the Deer Lakes Highland and Devils Canyon area north of the Ronald Reagan Freeway.

The $100,000 sale price covers the county's costs to acquire and manage the property since 1952.

``This cleans out all of the county's ownership of land north of the Deerlake Ranch development,'' said Paul Edelman, chief of natural resources and planning for the conservation authority. ``Slowly, we are building what is the core of the Michael D. In March 2004, the supervisors approved a hotly contested proposal to build hundreds of homes at Deerlake Ranch, which has been the subject of debate for years.

, to lessen the impact of the project by dedicating 145 acres for open space outside the project, an additional 79 acres within the project and construction of more than 4.2 miles of equestrian and hiking trails.

Since then, the authority has obtained a 32-acre parcel and a 145-acre parcel and will obtain a 15-acre piece once tax issues are resolved.

In addition to the 47-acre parcel the supervisors sold Tuesday, the authority expects to obtain a 79-acre parcel soon.
